9 Tips to Protect Your Energy as an Empath or a Highly Sensitive Person

As an empath or highly sensitive person, I know firsthand how easy it is to absorb the energy of those around me. While this ability allows for deep connection and insight, it can also be overwhelming. There have been times when I’ve felt emotionally drained, anxious, or even physically exhausted just from being in a space with heavy energy. That’s why protecting my energy has become a non-negotiable part of my daily routine. I want to share the techniques that have helped me maintain balance, emotional well-being, and spiritual clarity.

1. Set Clear Intentions

Intentions are powerful. Every morning, before stepping into my day, I set the intention to protect my energy. I say a simple affirmation like, “I am surrounded by light and only absorb positive energy.” As I say this, I visualize a warm, golden light wrapping around me like a protective shield. This practice alone has helped me navigate interactions without feeling completely drained.

2. Use Grounding Techniques

Grounding helps me stay centered and prevents me from feeling overwhelmed by external energy. Here are a few grounding practices I rely on:

  • Walking barefoot on the ground (Earthing) – There’s something incredibly calming about feeling the earth beneath my feet. This helps me when I’m feeling confused, or life feels chaotic. Laying on the ground on a sunny day, just feeling the sunshine on you and feeling the grounding frequencies of the earth holding you is one of my favourite things to do.

  • Meditating with grounding visualizations – I imagine roots growing from my feet deep into the earth, keeping me anchored.

  • Holding grounding crystals – I often carry black tourmaline or smoky quartz in my pocket when I know I’ll be in energetically challenging spaces.

3. Create an Energetic Shield

One of the most effective ways I protect myself is by visualizing an energetic shield. Before heading into crowded or emotionally intense environments, I take a moment to imagine a sphere of golden light surrounding me. This shield acts as a barrier, keeping out negativity while allowing love and positive energy to flow in.

4. Practice Energetic Cleansing

Since I absorb so much energy throughout the day, I make it a habit to cleanse myself and my space regularly:

  • Smudging with sage and palo santo – I use sage to clear stagnant or negative energy from my home, especially after guests leave or after a stressful day. I also love burning palo santo for its warm, uplifting energy.

  • Washing my hands with cold water and soap – This is one of my go-to methods for a quick energy reset. I find that cold water not only refreshes me physically but also washes away any lingering energetic residue. My Reiki teacher taught me this technique and it has helped me so much!

  • Taking a salt bath – Soaking in Epsom salt or sea salt helps me release any heaviness I may have picked up.

5. Set Healthy Boundaries

Empaths often struggle with setting boundaries, but I’ve learned that saying “no” is one of the most important ways to protect my energy. If I spend time with someone and consistently feel drained afterward, I take it as a sign to limit my interactions with them. Protecting my personal space and emotional well-being isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

6. Work with Protective Crystals

Crystals play a big role in my energy protection practices. Crystals hold the frequency of the earth, they come out of the earth and they are the earth, just like we are. Holding grounding crystals can be so beneficial to us. I also use a selenite lamp in my office to help cleanse the energy in the room. I bought mine at a local store for around $50, and I find that its gentle, purifying energy helps create a calm and balanced atmosphere.

  • Black Tourmaline: My go-to for shielding against negative energy.

  • Amethyst: Helps keep my mind clear and promotes spiritual protection- also a great crystal to help you connect with your Crown Chakra.

  • Labradorite: Strengthens my aura and helps me stay grounded.

  • Obsidian: Great for absorbing negativity and keeping me energetically balanced.

7. Engage in Self-Care Practices

Self-care is essential for keeping my energy strong. I make time for activities that nourish me, like journaling, meditating, taking nature walks, and practicing yoga. These practices help me recharge and stay in alignment.

8. Call on Spiritual Protection

Whenever I feel energetically drained or overwhelmed, I call upon my spirit guides and angels for protection. A simple prayer or a moment of quiet reflection can make a huge difference in strengthening my energetic boundaries.

9. Cut Energetic Cords

There are times when I feel emotionally or energetically attached to someone in a way that isn’t serving me. When this happens, I practice cord-cutting. I close my eyes, visualize energetic cords between me and the person, and imagine cutting them with a beam of light. This simple practice helps me regain my energy and feel lighter.
